# Manage asset relation types

Asset relation types define the named relationships you use to link the items in your inventory. You can link an asset to another asset, such as a server *backed up to* another server, or an asset to a user, such as a laptop *used by* a person.

Each type has a name and a reverse name, so the relationship reads correctly from both sides. Lansweeper includes several built-in relation types, and you can create your own.

Once a relation type exists, you apply it when you link items. To link assets to other assets or users, see [Create asset relations](/docs/link-assets-to-assets-or-users). To link a user to assets from the **Users** inventory, see [Create user relations](/docs/create-user-relations).

## Create a relation type

1. Go to **Assets** > **Relations**.
2. Select **Create relation type**.
3. Enter a **Name** for the type, such as *Monitored by*.
4. Enter a **Reverse name**, such as *Monitors*. The reverse name describes the relationship from the related item's side.
5. Select or search for an icon to represent the type.
6. Select **Create**.

## Edit a relation type

1. Go to **Assets** > **Relations**.
2. Select **...** for the relation type you want to edit.
3. Select **Edit** to revise the relation type's:
  - Name
  - Reverse name
  - Icon
4. Select **Save**.

## Delete a relation type

1. Go to **Assets** > **Relations**.
2. Select **...** for the relation type you want to delete.
3. Select **Delete**.

              Built-in relation types

You can't edit or delete Lansweeper's built-in relation types. The **Edit** and **Delete** actions are available only for relation types you create.

## Next steps

With your relation types in place, start linking items:

- [Create asset relations](/docs/link-assets-to-assets-or-users) to link assets to other assets or users.
- [Create user relations](/docs/create-user-relations) to link a user to assets from the **Users** inventory.
