# Custom fields

Custom fields let you add extra data fields to your assets to capture information that Lansweeper doesn't collect by default. There are two types:

- **Basic custom fields**: Fields you define and populate manually.
- **Derived fields**: Calculated fields that evaluate an expression across your asset data. See [About derived fields](/docs/about-derived-fields).

## Basic custom fields

### Create a custom field

1. Go to **Assets** > **Fields** > **Custom fields**.
2. Select **Create a custom field**.
3. Enter the name of the custom field.
4. Select the **Type** of custom field. Depending on the type, you may also need to enter **Selectable options** or **Currency**.
5. Enter the **Field description**.
6. Select **Create**.

### Edit a custom field

1. Go to **Assets** > **Fields** > **Custom fields**.
2. Select the custom field, then select **Show Actions**.
3. Select **Edit** to revise the custom field's:
  - Name
  - Type
  - Selectable options
  - Field description
4. Select **Save**.

### Delete a custom field

1. Go to **Assets** > **Fields** > **Custom fields**.
2. Select the custom field, then select **Show Actions**.
3. Select **Delete**.
