# Create asset relations

Asset relations connect the items in your inventory with named relationships. You can link an asset to another asset, such as a server *backed up to* another server, or to a user, such as a laptop *used by* a person.

Every relation uses a relation type. To create or manage relation types, see [Manage asset relation types](/docs/asset-relations). To link a user to assets from the **Users** inventory instead, see [Create user relations](/docs/create-user-relations).

## Prerequisites

- A relation type that fits the relationship you want to record. To create one, see [Manage asset relation types](/docs/asset-relations).
- The **Create relations between assets and users** permission. If you don't have it, contact your site administrator.

## Create an asset relation

You create asset relations from an asset's overview page. When you relate an asset to a user, you can select any user in your inventory, including users synced from Active Directory and Microsoft Entra ID (formerly Azure AD).

1. Go to **Assets** > **Views** and locate the asset you want to create a relation for.
2. Hover over the asset's name, then select **Go to asset** to open its overview page.
3. Select **Edit**.
4. In the **Relations** section, select **Create new relation**.
5. Choose whether to relate the asset to another **Asset** or to a **User**.
6. Search for and select one or more targets.
7. Select a **Relation type**.
8. Optionally, set a start date and an end date. If you don't set a start date, the relation takes effect immediately.
9. Select **Create**, then **Save changes**.
