Lansweeper's categorization tools let you add context to your asset inventory with custom groups, types, states, and IP locations. For custom fields and derived fields, see Custom fields. For defining relationships between assets and users, see Asset relations.

Selecting a discovery system determines the scope of an IP location:
- Global IP location: an IP location without a discovery system; applies broadly across your environment.
- Local IP location: an IP location with a discovery system; scoped to a specific system.
IP ranges cannot overlap between IP locations of the same type. For example, two global IP locations can't share overlapping ranges, and neither can two local IP locations. A local IP location can overlap with a global IP location — when an asset falls within both, it's always assigned to the local IP location, since local IP locations are evaluated first.
