Licensed, unlicensed, and non-billable assets

Prev Next

Every asset Lansweeper discovers appears in your inventory, but not every asset counts toward your plan. Each asset carries a status, licensed, unlicensed, or non-billable, that shows whether it's billed and how much detail you can see.

All plans from November 5, 2026

These statuses currently apply to the Free plan. From November 5, 2026, they apply to all plans.

How Lansweeper decides what counts

Lansweeper checks 2 things:

  1. Billable type. Is it a distinct asset worth managing on its own? Independent assets such as computers, servers, monitors, virtual machines, and managed databases are billable. Components that exist only as part of another asset, such as a disk or a mouse, aren't.
  2. Licensed limit. Billable assets are counted in the order they enter your inventory. Those that arrive before you reach your licensed limit are licensed. Any that arrive after are unlicensed. First in, first licensed.

Asset statuses

Billable assets are the ones that can count toward your plan. Each billable asset is either licensed or unlicensed. Non-billable assets never count.

Licensed

The asset is a billable asset type and entered your inventory before you reached your licensed limit. Licensed assets show full scan detail, such as manufacturer, model, and state.

Unlicensed

The asset is a billable asset type that entered your inventory after you reached your licensed limit. You can still discover as many assets as you want, but unlicensed assets show only basic details, such as name, type, and IP address.

Non-billable

The asset appears in your inventory but doesn't count toward your billable total, because it exists only as part of another asset or isn't a distinct asset to manage on its own. Cloud sub-resources such as disks and network interfaces, rules such as security groups, and containers such as VPCs are all non-billable. To see which Public Cloud resources are billable, see Manage your licensed asset limit.

View and filter assets by status

The Licensed column is included in your asset views by default, sorted to show licensed assets first. To filter by status:

  1. Go to Assets > Views. To see all your assets, go to All views > All assets.
  2. Select Filters > Add filter.
  3. Enter the following:
    • Field: Licensed
    • Operator: Equals
    • Value: Licensed, Unlicensed, or Non-billable
  4. Select Apply.
  5. To save the view, select Unsaved view > Save as new, enter a name, then select Save as new.

To see your totals for each status, go to Site settings > Subscription plan.

Site owner or admin access required

Only site owners and site admins can access the Subscription plan page. If you don't see this option, contact your site owner.

Manage what's counted

To keep an asset type out of your inventory entirely, use discovery exclusions. To see how monitors, Public Cloud resources, and other asset types are counted, see Manage your licensed asset limit.
